TYSA: Staten Island’s Behavioral Health Coalition

About Initiative

TYSA is a data-driven collaboration aimed at leveraging the power of collective impact to decrease substance use and substance-related harms, improve mental health, and increase healthy choices for Staten Island’s youth and young adults. This coalition seeks to increase opportunities to access quality prevention, early intervention, treatment, recovery, and harm reduction services on Staten Island to change the dialogue around behavioral health issues.

Why does it matter?

Our community is facing record levels of mental health and substance use-related issues. Youth are struggling with anxiety, depression, and suicide and are ever more likely to turn to substances to cope. Parents and other adults are overwhelmed, and many cannot afford housing, healthcare, and other essential items. So many in our community have lost loved ones to suicide and overdose.

We at TYSA acknowledge this. We have been working to improve Staten Island’s behavioral health using data-driven, evidence-based approaches for over a decade and will continue to do so until the behavioral health needs of all Staten Islanders have been met.

How We Measure Success

TYSA uses the following metrics to measure the success of our strategies:

Decreased substance use
and overdoses

Decreased mental health issues and suicidal ideation/
attempts/deaths

Increased protective factors (i.e., community connectedness, available and culturally appropriate local programming, etc.)

Decreased risk factors (i.e, attitudes favorable towards substance use, availability of substances, etc.)

Increased funding from local, state, and federal government agencies that supports behavioral health for Partnerships and the overall behavioral health landscape.

Our Approach

TYSA is a dynamic partnership of private and nonprofit organizations, city and state government agencies, philanthropists, parents, teachers, and young people with personal and professional expertise. TYSA utilizes collective impact to decrease substance misuse and improve mental health through education, reducing stigma, collecting and distributing data, providing opportunities for youth community involvement, connecting the community with needed services and resources, and advocating for systems-level change at local, state, and federal levels.

Our Structure

If you are interested in participating in any of the following TYSA’s workgroups, please contact Natalie Wieschenberg (natalie1@sipcw.org)
